Lars Arge new chairman of the Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences

As of 1 January 2017, Lars Arge is the new chairman of the Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences. Lars Arge has been a member of the council since January 2013 and vice-chair since January 2015.

Professor Lars Arge from Aarhus University has been appointed chairman of the Danish Council for Independent Research, Natural Sciences, succeeding Professor Lone Gram from the Technical University of Denmark. He is a professor of Computer Science and leader of the Danish National Research Foundation’s Center for Massive Data Algorithmics (MADALGO).

“I am very honoured to have been elected chairman of the council and I take on the role with a great deal of respect for the council’s work. The council receives far more excellent project proposals than we can support, and the council members work very hard to select the projects that are funded,” he says.

Professor Arge’s research interests lie in the area of algorithms and data structures with a focus on memory hierarchy efficient algorithms, especially I/O-efficient algorithms for problems involving massive data sets (big data).

Professor Arge completed his PhD at Aarhus University in 1996, and spent the following years at Duke University in the USA, before returning to Denmark in 2004. He is a recipient of the Danish Elite Research (EliteForsk) award, a Fellow of the Association of Computing Machinery, and an elected member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters and the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences. Since November 2016, he has also served as the Secretary General of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

Apart from his scientific career, Professor Arge is the co-founder and chairman of Scalable Algorithmics (SCALGO), a company that markets software and services in connection with efficient processing of massive terrain data in general, and flood risk analysis in particular.
