Research centres

In addition to the seven departments and department-like centres, research at Natural Sciences is anchored in a number of research centres. The research centres include interdisciplinary thematic centres, highly specialised basic research centres supported by the Danish National Research Foundation, major research centres financed by, among others, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Villum Foundation, as well as interdisciplinary centres and centres across faculties.

Interdisciplinary thematic centres

Aarhus University has set up a number of interdisciplinary thematic research centres that focus specifically on developing solutions to major societal challenges. The centres work primarily across the faculties of Natural Sciences and Technical Sciences.

Centers of Excellence

Natural Sciences has six basic research centres (Centres of Excellence) financed by the Danish National Research Foundation. The centres conduct research at the highest level both nationally and internationally.

Other research centres

The departments at Natural Sciences have a number of research centres supported by, among others, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Villum Foundation, as well as interdisciplinary centres between several departments.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation CO₂ Research Center

The Novo Nordisk Foundation CO₂ Research Center is a mission‐oriented center with the purpose to develop novel science for CO₂ capture and CO₂ conversions for storage or utilization to replace fossil carbon and fossil fuel‐intensive processes with sustainable, CO₂‐based technologies.

Open Innovation in Science

With its fully open platforms for public-private research collaboration, Aarhus University has become a frontrunner in open innovation in science. A number of Danish and international companies are now collaborating with the university on research that will benefit all parties – and all the world.
