Departments and centres

Natural Sciences consists of seven departments and one department-like centre. The faculty  has a large number of research centres and eight interdisciplinary thematic centres together with the Faculty of Technical Sciences. In addition, the faculty has a PhD school, Graduate School of Natural Sciences.

Interdisciplinary clusters

The eight interdisciplinary clusters at Aarhus University focus specifically on developing solutions to global ‘Grand Challenges’.

CBIO – Aarhus University Centre for Circular Bioeconomy

CBIO works with bioeconomical production systems and recycling based on green biomass.

iMAT – Aarhus University Centre for Integrated Materials Research

iMAT integrates activities in materials research cutting across the fields of chemistry, engineering, physics, nanoscience and geology.

iCLIMATE - Aarhus University Interdisciplinary Centre for Climate Change

iCLIMATE combines basic research with practice-related solutions to global climate challenges.

ARC - Arctic Research Centre

ARC focuses on the melting cryosphere and it’s feedback on the climate system and effects on ecosystems and societies.

DIGIT - Aarhus University Centre for Digitalisation, Big Data and Data Analytics

DIGIT combines basic and applied research in Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering with a focus on global digital development.

WATEC - Aarhus University Centre for Water Technology

WATEC supports and strengthens Aarhus University’s leading global position in several water technologies in collaboration with the business sector.

CiFOOD – Aarhus University Centre for Innovative Food Research

CiFOOD focuses on the innovative, sustainable and healthy food solutions of the future in interdisciplinary collaboration on food research.

SpaCe – Aarhus Space Centre

SpaCe includes activities within space and space research in the broadest sense: research, education, innovation, external and internal collaborations, and both theoretical and practical work.

Centres of Excellence

The Danish National Research Foundation is currently funding ten Centers of Excellence at Natural Sciences. The centers conduct research at the highest level nationally and internationally.

Other major centres

In addition to Centers of Excellence and interdisciplinary thematic centres, Natural Sciences has a number of other major research centres financed by, among others, the Novo Nordisk Foundation and the Villum Foundation, as well as interdisciplinary and cross-faculty centres.
